Washington foreign policy experts have argued for years over the “linkage” between the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict and broader American interests in the region and around the world. They debate whether
resolving the conflict is in fact a “core national security interest”—a position more frequently articulated
under the Obama Administration than in prior years. Some pro-Israel advocates fear that, in the name
of its own national interest, the United States will pressure Israel to take actions that are counter to
